Dell sent the XPS I cancelled to take advantage of the 10% discount. I will give a full review when I receive the correct lappy. Ran 3Dmark03 and got 3390. 512mb RAM. Not bad.

This is the last lappy for me for a long time-HOPE! My wife can't take much more.

GSferrari knows my whole laptop journey.

I ordered my 1st XPS on 2/16. Cancelled on 2/24 and ordered another XPS without the DVD-RW and the 10% discount on the same day. Saved $306!

Apparently they did not process the cancellation correctly because I received 2 emails on 3/3 telling me that both laptops had been shipped. The cancelled order was overnighted which I had to pay only $29 extra for, and the 2nd is UPS ground, which should arrive Tue or Wed of next week. I called them and they are coming to pick it up on Monday. Gives me the weekend to really test it out.

1st Impressions: Awesome! Lighter than it looks. Even though it looks bulky I think it looks cool on the platform-Keyboard feels solid. Computer feels very solid.

Packaging: A+ Dell knows how to package their stuff. Everything worked flawlessly and the wireless G card immediately picked up my router.

Screen: A+ Viewing angles are great. This is the best looking screen I have seen. My wife even said wow which she never said with the 17" or the 15" AMD 64.

Gaming: A The only game I had time to load and play was UT2004 Demo. 1920X1200 ran a little slow. 1200X800 was freakin perfect. Those were the only 2 Res. I tried.

Design: A- I wish there was a few more hot buttons for internet and email. 1 surprise is the little mouse button in the middle of the keyboard that I believe IBM made famous. Gobs of plug-ins.

Sound: Audio is the best I have heard. The Sager 4780 was good but this is better. The laptop is very quiet-by far the quietest I have experience.

Overall I am totally psyched that I finally landed on the XPS. I know the Sager 8790 finally hit the market this week, which was the front runner until the XPS arrived. But think about a few things. Upgradeable video card! In 1-2 years Dell will come to your house and install a state of the art VC for around $600-give or take $1-500. Very nice! Much longer battery life. 2.5 hours says tech TV. A screen that has a refresh rate <25 and a res. that can't be touched, yet. All for about $2500-with 10% disc.

I will continue to update everyone if this forums does not get flooded with XPS reviews.

HAHAH wow that sounds amazing can't wait till i get mine, I'm suprised that it ran slow in high resolution , 512 of RAM is what I think caused the slow down. Awesome review tho

WOW 2.5 hours battery life? thats pretty good! I may be getting an XPS soon! What were you actually doing in those 2.5 hours tho?

Meddude - glad you found a good laptop FINALLY

but on the UPGRADE thingy - in 1-2 years PCI Express will be the thing of the future...and current motherboards are not PCI Express ready.

You will be FORCED to either take or leave an upgrade in the next 6 months which itself is not a bad thing but its not a good thing either.

So dont count on the upgrade as a BIG decision behind your purchase...thats just plain silly.

The 9100 is similarly powerful for a LOT less money...

GS, you are correct, how often people forget how PCI express will thorw a wrench into the equation.

Until pci express starts appearing in laptops I won't worry about it.

Why some people think that "refresh rates" represent something, I've read everywhere it's just some silly propaganda, just like the 8X AGP

You mean response times or refresh rates?? The higher the refresh rates the better because no matter how great your 3D card, your screen will NOT refresh any faster than 60hz...so if you have 60 or to be safe 70 fps then you are just as good as someone with 100000 fps.

the only difference is that you should be able to hold 60-70 fps under all conditions...most cards that can do 100fps bog down to 60-70 fps under load.

Ya, don't worry too much about PCI-express until you actually start seeing it. Think about the people who were waiting for Prescott or Dothan to buy.

Even when you DO see it, there will likely be a several month to a year phase-in period. By then, the XPS will likely be outdated no matter what.

My Insp8200 is only 18 months old, and it's a good THREE generations out of date!

I hope the XPS will be able to last for gaming for at least a year or 2. My POS of a desktop is still good and its only a Athlon 2400+ XP, w/ a ti4200 AGP8x. It can handle most games so I'm happy with that. The XPS is much faster in all aspects so I'm assuming it can hold its own for a while assuming it doesn't burn out

There is no game out as of today that even comes close to saturating the 4x AGP bus...I'm sure the Doom 3 engine and possibly the Half-Life 2 engine will certainly push today's video cards, but look at the life of these "engines" for other games and mods...Quake 3(5 years), Unreal (+5 years),.... My laptop/desktop configs usually are good for 2+ years, or at least I try to plan it that way. I hope that Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 are out when I get my new "lappy". I been holding off for Doom 3, but work wants me to upgrade right away (here's my ticket to a good portable desktop replacement) and my wife won't let me upgrade the desktop 'till summer.

I think Doom 3 is supposed to be out next month, I am probably wrong tho. Who knows about HL2, could be the end of the year. I think id will probably wait untill after E3 to release D3 actually, that way they can build up more hype about the game, not that there isnt enough already.
