Just bought the M6809, did the default wireless setup described in the wireless book emachine provided.

I have the wireless setup and it is working great in accessing the cable internet however the funny thing that is happening is that apparently someone else in the neighborhood has a wireless set up as well and every 2 minutes or so, I get a prompt that there are several networks to choose from and my wireless connection gets dropped and I have to reconnect.

I have tried to use just the broadcom utility instead of the windows wireless utility however in doing so, I cannot see nor see anywhere to add my wireless. I have the router set up so not to broadcast etc. for security reasons given within the set up instructions.

Does any of this makes sense? Hope someone can give me a clue as to what is going on, in the meantime, I will just keep using this other wireless connection that seems to always stay on regardless of my attempts to specify using my wireless connection.

Thanks

I understand what you are saying but I do not know enough about wifi connections other then ad-hoc ones. I see other networks in my area but I have mine set up to only connect to ad-hoc networks.

I think their is a way to only show selected networks. But not sure if it is within the Windows wifi properties or the Broadcom one. Hopefully someone with some more experience will answer in, because I would like to know as well.

I'm not sure, because I don't have wireless network to check it, but I alreday installed at least two, In one of them there was another wireless connection, and I thing its the same situation.....maybe the device (wireless card) turns off to save energy and thats why drops your network and then shows you the prompt that there are several networks to choose.

I hope that this help you......

Your problem definitely has to do with interference with the wireless signal. One possibility is that your signal could be getting noise from other wireless products in your house, such as cordless phones etc... But your main problem is probably those other wireless connections in your neighborhood. Windows is automatically configured to try to connect to the best possible wireless connection available, so its constantly scanning for new connections which causes the "several networks to choose from" message to appear. The best solution is to change the channel that your router/wireless access point uses to broadcast the signal. The default channel is 6, trying changing it to 1 or 11 and it should probably solve your problem.

Thanks for the suggestion...will try that out and let everyone know.

Ok I have made the necessary changes as well as did a clean install of WinXP Pro. Everything seems to be working great now!

Many thanks for the help and information!!

In the wireless utitlity click advanced and select connect to only ap infastructure (that will stop ad-hoc connections) and remove the check box to automaticaly connect to non-preffered networks. At that point, make sure only your router is in the preffered network area. Finally, to assure no interference, change your channel as far from the others as possible.
